The Rising Problems
It's time for our part 2 of the Nightwing/Superman crossover that previously saw Jon and Nightwing coming together in more ways than one. In our first part we saw that with the billions of dollars that Alfred left him, Dick Grayson was using some of his money to fund The Truth, the news outlet that is run by Jon's boyfriend, Jay Nakamura. That wasn't all though because the Rising continues, with President Bendix trying to put his Post-Human army to good use, but bad use to everyone else, where three of his group were going around killing superheroes, one of them being the former Titan, Risk. Let's jump into this issue and see what Jon and Dick will do to get to the bottom of this and maybe incriminate Lex Luthor in this operation. Let's check it out.
While I've been enjoying title and most of what Tom Taylor does at DC Comics, one of my main problems is that his books always seem to fly by with what feels like little progression, and with this being the end of the two-part team-up between Superman and Nightwing I was looking for something that felt like it had a beginning, middle and end, but that isn't the case here and right when it feels like we might start to get somewhere with this team-up, the issue was over and all it seemed like we did was get Lois Lane involved in the story more going forward and also Bendix's continued pursuit to turn the people against Jon Kent as Superman.
Now with all that being said, this isn't just a throwaway issue for fans because while the progression of the story didn't do as much as I would have liked, we do have an issue that's full of emotion, and Nightwing just continuing to be shown to be a great guy that will be there for Jon and us knowing that Jon's Superman at least, for the time being, is going to need a mentor because the guilt that he feels when he thinks that he failed overcomes him more than we've seen from his father's adventures.
All in all, I love the art in this book and as for the story, there are some fun moments with Jon and Dick teaming up to take on the trio that killed Risk, not to mention all the emotional moments that Dick tried to be there for Jon. The character moments are the key to this issue because the progression in the plot leaves a bit to be desired because like I said at the beginning, Tom Taylor's books just fly by like you barely read anything. Maybe that's just because they're so enjoyable, but I always feel like little happened issue to issue. Like I said though, this is more of an emotional book and in that regards it works and I can't wait to see where the story goes from here, where Jon will confront Lex, and where this group of truth-seekers finally clear Superman's name.
Bits and Pieces:
The characters in this book are portrayed great and because of that, we get a really emotional and engaging story from how they're feeling and what they want to do about the situation. That being said though, the actual story never actually feels like it goes anywhere because of how fast things move and how the focus seems to be to allow Jon to express himself in what he's feeling. The art is great though and the characters are endearing, I just wish the story felt like it had more substance issue-to-issue.
